Separation of \gamma/\pi^0 showers at high energies

We have designed and carried out simulation studies of a two layer Shower Maximum Detector diagonally off-set (SMD-dos) optimized for the separation of \pi^0 showers from \gamma showers in the 30 to 150 GeV energy range. For 90% \gamma acceptance the SMD-dos yields \pi^0 rejection efficiency of 92+-4%, 87+-4% and 32+-2%, respectively, for 30, 50 and 150 GeV incident energies. We find that the SMD-dos is superior to a conventional geometry single-layer or mutiple-layer shower maximum detector (SMD), of equal granularity, by an average factor of ~1.5 over the 50 to 150 GeV energy range. We also find that the SMD-dos gives better \pi^0 rejection, for the same number of channels, than a SMD. At hadron - hadron colliders the signature of choice for the detection of the Higgs particle, in the mass range of 120 to 160 GeV, is via the decay H-->\gamma\gamma. The addition of a SMD-dos to the planned detectors at the LHC would significantly reduce the background to the \gamma-signal coming from prolific \pi^0 production.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, LaTeX. The Impact of Supervisor Servant Leadership on Counselor Supervisee Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress

This study investigates the prediction of supervisee burnout and secondary traumatic stress by perceived supervisor servant leadership. Authors hypothesized that the servant leadership of supervisors would predict diminished burnout and secondary traumatic stress of supervisees. A sample of 241 counseling supervisees participated in the cross-sectional study and completed instruments measuring burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and perceived servant leadership of their direct supervisors. Data were analyzed with two simple linear regressions, and a one-way MANOVA was performed to determine if supervisee burnout, supervisee secondary traumatic stress, and perceived servant leadership of supervisors differed significantly according to supervisor type (i.e., clinical, administrative, or dual role). Results confirmed the main hypothesis, and administrative supervisors were perceived to demonstrate significantly less servant leadership qualities than the other two supervisor types. Limitations, avenues for future research, and implications for counselor education and supervision are discussed

Self-reported diurnal mood changes, early morning awakening and the dexamethasone suppression test in endogenous depression

Several authors have suggested that Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST) non-suppression is related to circadian alternations of hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal function. Two clinical manifestations of altered circadian rhythms in depressed patients are early morning awakening and diurnal variation in mood. To observe whether these clinical symptom patterns were associated with an increased frequency of abnormal DSTs, we examined post-DST plasma cortisol concentrations and matched clinical ratings of early morning awakening and diurnal variation in mood in 49 patients with major depressive disorder, endogenous subtype. We found no significant association between these clinical and laboratory variables.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/25785/1/0000346.pd

    Jamming non-local quantum correlations

    Get PDF
We present a possible scheme to tamper with non-local quantum correlations in a way that is consistent with relativistic causality, but goes beyond quantum mechanics. A non-local ``jamming" mechanism, operating within a certain space-time window, would not violate relativistic causality and would not lead to contradictory causal loops. The results presented in this Letter do not depend on any model of how quantum correlations arise and apply to any jamming mechanism.Comment: 10 pp, LaTe

Serial dexamethasone suppression tests in simultaneous panic and depressive disorders

Recent work suggests that the simultaneous occurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) may be of relevance for clinical findings, therapeutic outcome, and prognosis. It is of interest to know whether or not this relevance extends to biological findings. We addressed this question through comparison of serial Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST) results in patients who had either MDD alone or simultaneous MDD and PD. We were unable to describe differences between the groups.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/26790/1/0000346.pd
